Preparing for the Battle at Amon Sul

Tearose Underhill was a hobbit who usually kept her word. So when she told everyone that she wouldn’t be fighting any more battles unless they were close to home or no farther than Breeland, she thought she meant it. But she couldn’t say no to Candaith’s request for assistance with enemies who had set up camps in and around Weathertop.
So she summoned her assistant, Madeleine, an herbalist from Bree, who had become fiercely loyal and protective of Tearose. Together they travelled to the Lone-Lands and stopped at the Forsaken Inn for rest before continuing on to Weathertop.
“Madeleine, have you got enough supplies or shall we speak to Anlaf the Forlorn to get us what we need?” Tearose asked her friend.
“Indeed, we are well supplied, my dear Tearose, as I made sure we had everything we needed before we left the Shire”, Madeleine replied with a smile.
“That is great news, for then we should think about nothing but rest and maybe a good supper while we can, for who knows what tomorrow will bring?” Tearose laughed as she spoke, for Madeleine never seemed to eat very much nor did she seem to even need food. Tearose, on the other hand, like most hobbits, could eat much and often.
So they both went downstairs and Tearose ate with relish, for Anlaf the Forlorn brought her all her favorites and he seemed amused by her healthy appetite. After supper, they sat quietly and discussed their plans for the next day and it wasn’t long before they retired for the night.
At dawn, they left for Weathertop. It was raining and the wind was chilly. As they climbed up to the top of Amon Sul, Tearose shivered. She was wet and a little miserable, and she was grateful that the rain stopped just when they found Candaith standing beside a large fire.
“Well met, Tearose,” Candaith said with a smile and nodded at Madeleine. “We have much to prepare, ladies. Please light all of these fires, for they will help us by keeping some of the enemy at bay. I have laid a trap to defeat a Cargul, a servant of the Nine and of the Dark Lord himself. I will defeat him and together we shall rid this place of all the other enemies who we might encounter here. Be vigilant and remember to keep the fires burning!”
And so Tearose lit all the fires and she, Madeleine and Candaith did everything they could to prepare for the impending assualt. They were ready and all they could do now was wait.
