Pareth’s Reluctant Departure

Posted By on January 10, 2010

Pareth’s holiday in the beautiful countryside of the Shire was over. She received her instructions from the lady Galadriel and Lord Celeborn to set out east again to the borders of Lothlorien and yes, though she dreaded it, she would also need to return to Moria.

Moria was still filled with all manner of of enemy: orcs, goblins, warg-riders, and vile dangerous creatures, the likes of which Pareth had never encountered before entering Moria. And these enemy armies started setting camps outside of Lothlorien’s borders. The elves were very busy protecting their beloved Lothlorien and Pareth knew they needed her skills as a hardy hunter, who has seen her share of battle.

“I will leave these dear Halflings once more and help Lady Galadriel. Besides, I will come back soon enough, I’m sure.”

Pareth wasn’t quite sure what would happen next. She just knew she had to survive the many battles she would fight. For she dreamed that one day she would return to the Shire once more before leaving forever for her beloved home in Gondor.

So she patted her horse Arinen and rode out alone. The Shire was quiet and peaceful and she enjoyed the ride. She travelled for days in safety for most of the trouble these days was further east and to the north and the news of terror in Mirkwood spread far and wide. Many of the Free Peoples’ Army had already left for Mirkwood, and Pareth would eventually be sent there too.

Pareth tried not to think too far ahead. She rode on and attempted to silence her racing thoughts. She breathed the fresh air and calmed down.

“If I think too much, I will despair! So let me turn my thoughts to creating lovely and powerful jewelery, and cooking wholesome food for weary travellers. Let me think of the beauty of untouched lush countrysides scattered throughout Middle Earth. Let me breathe the clean air unfouled by the enemies’ stench. Let me not falter now. For I am Pareth, a strong hunter of Gondor. I will survive this war.”

She was determined and her inner strength would save her life many times in the many weeks to come.

A Messenger from Lothlorien

The Elven city of Duillond in Ered Luin has been bustling with activity of late, as many visitors have been coming and going during the Yule festival. Among the many visitors was Laerchel from Lothlorien who came to seek out Dorungur Whitehorn, at the request of the Lady Galadriel. Laerchel was made to feel welcome and she was immediately at ease with the inhabitants of Duillond.

Over the next several days, Laerchel offered her aid and she defeated many goblins who had invaded Limael’s Vineyard and Dol Ringwest. She was tireless in her duties and she became well known and respected in those parts.

The Lady Galadriel had instructed Laerchel to visit the Shire also and scout out certain areas for signs of the enemy, and Laerchel, curious to meet the Halflings, was happy to oblige. But she was delayed by her commitments to the Elves of Falathlorn, and by the time she left for the Shire, brigands had already taken over Old Odo’s Leaf-farm.

Laerchel knew she was going to be staying in the West for many months to come, and she was at peace with her fate. For surely, it wouldn’t be long until she could board a ship and leave Middle Earth with what was left of her kin.

Yuletide Preparations

Hobbits love celebrations of any kind and Yule, in particular, is one of their favorites, because they are so fond of feasting and presents. In truth most hobbits don’t need any excuse for a celebration, and Pareth embraced their carefree attitude.

This year, Pareth was determined to enjoy the festivities and entertain her hobbit friends, so she decorated her temporary home in the Shire. The Elves gave her beautiful garlands for her parlor, and a lovely snow globe which she placed in her bedroom so she could day dream while she stared into it.

She laid out some food for her guests and she changed out of her usual warrior armour, to a dress. It felt good to feel feminine and pampered. It was a very pleasant change from hunting orcs and the like, when she was constantly dirty from the travelling in the wild.

“Well”, thought Pareth with a sigh, “Thank goodness for hobbits and their good cheer. They make my heart glad. Now where are they? They’re late!”
