Tearose Underhill In loving memory of Tearose Underhill, a brave hobbit warrior of the Shire

Simple Pleasures

Posted By on February 6, 2011

Tearose Underhill escaped the scrutiny of her nosy neighbours and snuck back into the Shire. She had been away on an important mission and returned during the night. She spoke to no one and went home to get her fishing gear. She found her little fishing hole covered in leaves, but many fish hid in the foliage and so she had fun for a few hours catching all the fish she could ever eat in a week.

No one could blame Tearose for wanting this time of solitude, for she was beginning to get very weary of fighting. She missed the Shire and never wanted to leave again, if the truth be told. She felt selfish for thinking that way, though, because she had made many friends in her travels, all with a common goal – to rid Middle Earth of evil. These friends fought valiantly and rarely complained. For as hard as they fought, they also feasted hard, and Tearose shared many good times with her warrior friends.

But the further east she travelled, the tougher it was for Tearose. She felt she would be of better use helping out in skirmishes west of Moria, for Tearose would avoid Moria at all costs. She was never the same hobbit after she left Moria the last time. She came close to dying and she didn’t want to tempt fate. She wasn’t as reckless as when she first set out to conquer evil in Middle Earth.

Tearose had learned soon enough that she had to use every skill she had to stay alive, for lone hobbits who dared to fight Sauron’s minions were sought out and hunted. If she was found by any of Sauron’s captains or lieutenants, she would be murdered, unless she could get away quickly. Her quickness saved her before though injuries have now slowed her down some.

And it was these past injuries that seemed to give Tearose trouble in cold damp weather. So she decided it was time to take a holiday, though she knew that she would be bothered by family, friends, and neighbours here in the Shire. Normally she didn’t mind the companionship, but she was so tired that she just wanted some alone time.

Tearose decided she would take some time off alone to enjoy the simple pleasure of fishing. Most often she would go north to Evendim but it was cold there this time of year, so she travelled southwest to the milder port of Celondim, where the Elves were so gracious. They supplied her with very good food and wine from Limael’s Vineyard while she fished off their docks.

Ah yes, a simple holiday was exactly what Tearose Underhill needed. And a vacation to a spot where Elves loved to spoil hobbits was perfect. They respected her privacy and yet she was protected at the same time. She was grateful for simple pleasures: lots of privacy, delicious food and wine, and a beautiful place to fish. Tearose knew that she was a very lucky hobbit, indeed.

Escaping the Mazes of Minas Elendur

Pareth of Gondor travelled to Eregion to learn about the ruins of Minas Elendur. She was warned that it was a place that was taken over by minions of the traitor Saruman, a particularily nasty faction of Uruks, called Ninkoth.

So Pareth entered the ruins armed and ready to slay any enemies that she encountered. And there were many! Around every corner, and down all the corridors, there were the Ninkoths. They were fierce and they attacked Pareth, mocking her as they tried to kill her. But Pareth fought hard and tried to find her way around the maze of corridors. But it didn’t take too long for her to get hopefully lost. She realized that she was going around in circles, so after battling many Ninkoth, and trying to get out of the dark halls of the ruins, she was exhausted.

She found a quiet corner in one of the hallways, and rested. She ate some rations quickly, for she soon had to defend herself again when a Ninkoth Berserker discovered her. She slew him swiftly, for her skills with the bow were legendary.

She finally found the exit and vowed to return another time with a group of warriors who already had been through Minas Elendur and the cellars of Delotham. Pareth knew her limitations and though she was very capable of holding her own against enemies, there were times when she appreciated the company of kinfolk, for many of them had more experience than she did, and she learned much from them.

She slew more than three dozen Ninkoth that day in Minas Elendur, so she was very weary and injured when she returned to Echad Eregion. She rested there for several days before she could travel again. When she was fully healed, she spent some time gathering resources in Eregion before her journey back to Mirkwood, for she received an urgent message that her services were needed in Dol Guldur yet again.

“Alas for those brave Malledhrim, whose very lives are threatened daily by Sauron’s minions in that awful place!” thought Pareth. She raised her sword in a silent tribute, for she had fought beside the brave Elves on many occasions and she was honoured to be sought out again.

“Let every manner of evil minion of Sauron in Dol Guldur beware! For there will come a time when the very walls of their fortress will come tumbling down and the Elves of Lothlorien will have their revenge. Remember these words, brave warriors of Middle Earth, for we will prevail against evil. I know it in my heart!” cried Pareth as she directed her horse swiftly towards Mirkwood. And the forests listened in silence to the echoes of her battle cries while crebain circled overhead.

“We will prevail!”

A Voluntary Detour From the Grey Havens

Rinnien of Rivendell should have boarded the ship in the Grey Havens with her kin and a company of elves who were all leaving Middle Earth before the Dark Lord Sauron covered the world in darkness.

It would have been so easy for her to leave with her friends and family and not have another care in the world. But something was nagging Rinnien and at the last minute she fled from the shores of the Grey Havens and travelled to Celondim to seek refuge and spend time thinking about why she changed her mind.

Several days and nights passed and still Rinnien had no answers. So she offered to help the elves in Celondim and she made some new friends. These new friends warned her to be vigilant while travelling the countryside of Ered Luin, for the animals were wild and unpredictable and were known to attack travellers, and news of goblins setting up camps in Rath Teraig and Limael’s Vinyard made everyone very nervous.

Cardavor was one of the leaders in Celondim who dispatched warriors to the various areas to slay the goblins, for he believed they slew his son Avorthal. Rinnien volunteered to accompany them for she was a loremaster with some skill and could control crowds and deal quite a bit of damage using elemental forces.

She was trained by Elrond of Rivendell and though she had much more to learn, she had become quite powerful. The elves in Ered Luin soon heard about her brave deeds and they showed their appreciation by inviting her to feast with them and they gave her beautiful gifts.

It was during one such feast that the answer came to Rinnien. She had abandoned her journey to Valinor for she felt that she was still needed in Middle Earth. She wasn’t ready to retire yet, though there were times later on that she would regret her decision briefly. In the meantime, there was work to be done, and Rinnien was ready to do her part.
